Why can’t I draw exactly what I see in front of me? Surely talent plays a part or simply not enough time to perfect it? Just thinking about it is wrong. You just have to switch off when you draw. And that’s one of the things that makes drawing so difficult. This is because we’ve all learned in everyday life to put a lot more strain on the left hemisphere of the brain, which sends us an idea of what it sees in front of us and what it thinks it should look like exactly. First, we need to understand the main difference in the normal use of the left and right cerebral hemispheres. The left hemisphere is more focused on logical thinking, calculation and language skills. The right hemisphere is more responsible for the global aspects of the visual stimulus. Therefore, in this article, I will be discussing what American teacher and author Betty Edwards published in a book back in 1979 – Learn to Draw with the RIGHT Cerebral Hemisphere.

This forces the brain not to look at the image itself, but to see only its lines. That’s exactly what we need to be able to redirect from the left hemisphere to the right. I myself was very surprised how well drawing in this way can work.
